Arkansas Health Insurance

Arkansas Health Insurance has faced a hard fact in the past ten years. The population of uninsured Arkansas residents has risen from 13.7 percent in 2001, to a startling 18.9 percent in 2011. CHIP Arkansas (also known as the Arkansas Comprehensive Health Insurance Pool) was enacted as a state program that would address the challenge of health insurance for specific uninsured residents of Arkansas. These high risk pools are not designed only for the poor. They are created to assist those Arkansas Health Insurance residents who would not be able to buy health insurance. Health care insurance in the state of Arkansas is a critical area of interest. In 2011, the United Health Foundation ranked Arkansas at 47^th in its healthiest states to live in survey. Health care insurance coverage has a forceful impact on the health of the population of a state and in the next segment a review will be taken of the steps that are being taken in Arkansas Health Insurance Coverage.

Arkansas Health Insurance Coverage is divided into three segments. These areas include: Arkansas Employer Provided Health Insurance, Arkansas (Government) Health Insurance Coverage, and Uninsured Arkansas Health Care Insurance Options.

Arkansas Employer Provided Health Insurance - According to the Kaiser Health Reform Source taken in 2011, employer provided health insurance covers 42% of the population of Arkansas. This health care insurance coverage is offered as a benefit for the employee in their compensation packages. The latest statistics from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners in 2011 have listed the following insurance companies as the top ten health insurance companies in Arkansas.

1. Usable Mut Insurance Company

2. United Health Care Insurance Company

3. Humana Insurance Company

4. HMO Partners Inc.

5. QCS Health Plan Inc.

6. Care Improvement Plus S. Central Insurance

7. Wellcare Health Insurance of IL. Inc.

8. American Family Life Assurance Company of Col.

9. Delta Dental Plan of Arkansas Inc.

10. Arkansas Comm Care Inc.

Arkansas (Government) Health Insurance Coverage - In 2011, it was determined by the Kaiser Health Reform Source that 24% of Arkansas resident were Medicaid recipients and 18% were covered by Medicare federal health insurance. Arkansas, like most states offers Extra Help with Medicare payments, if the individual resident qualifies. For those who qualify, there are fifteen prescription drug plans through Medicare that offer a sum zero premium. In the state of Arkansas forty-nine Medicare prescription drug plans are available. ARKIDS First is the Arkansas health insurance coverage for children under eighteen who would not reach the eligibility guidelines for state sponsored Arkansas health insurance. This program adheres to strict guidelines and children who lost employer sponsored health insurance may have a waiting period for enrollment. CHIP Arkansas also fall under this category of state sponsored health insurance programs.

Uninsured Arkansas Health Care Insurance Options - The Kaiser Health Reform Source reported that in 2010 19% of Arkansas residents were uninsured. Ten per cent of this figure included children. This is a critical finding for those who are residents and those who are in charge of health care insurance in Arkansas. The state, rated at 47^th in overall health is also leading the country in premature death and infectious disease, both of which would be impacted by efficient health care insurance. The cost of the uninsured, however, is not only born by those who get sick and do not have health care insurance to cover their expenses. Those who are covered under employer provided health insurance and those who provide employer insurance bear a higher cost for premiums due to the uninsured in Arkansas. FamiliesUSA.org reported that in 2005, the uninsured health care insurance residents in Arkansas listed at 453,000. This figure rose to 496,000 by the year 2010 and is on the increase as high unemployment influences the state economy.

Arkansas has not yet felt the effect of the Affordable Care Act which is setting aside millions to subsidize preventative programs for smoking cessation, fresh food in schools, and other community centered programs.
