Assessment

Assessment is one of the most important aspects of any lesson or unit, because it checks for student understanding, and ensures that the teacher has successfully passed necessary information on to her students. There are many ways to assess students effectively, giving the teacher a better indication of how to move on with new lessons, and giving the students opportunity to put what they've learned into action and in-depth discussion.

A pre-assessment can help a teacher understand where to begin a lesson or unit. The teacher can give a short quiz, asking basic questions about the upcoming subjects of study, or hold a class discussion about the topic, making sure to note what each student contributes to the conversation. He or she can use this information to adjust lesson planning in order to best suit what the children already know and what they need to know.

After the lesson has been tailored to the students' needs, then taught, another assessment should be in place to check the students' understanding of what has been taught. This assessment will let the teacher know whether the lesson should be adjusted in some way so that the students gain a deeper understanding of the subject matter. The assessment should also have a substantial effect on the teacher's reflection process. After each lesson, the teacher needs to ask, "What went well, and what do I need to change?" Knowing what information students have absorbed helps with this process.

Authentic assessment is one of the most effective ways to not only check for understanding, but to help students apply what they have learned, and to help them retain that knowledge. These activities are meant to assess students' ability to put what they've learned into action, not just regurgitate definitions and facts. The focus of activities related to authentic assessment is creation. The students use what they learn to create products related to the topics they have learned. For instance, if the students are learning about weather, an authentic assessment would be completion of a filmed weather report, showing that the students understand weather-related words, and how different aspects of nature create and affect weather.

No matter what type of assessment a teacher chooses to use, it is vital to make the activity requirements clear to students with a rubric or graphic organizer. If students know what is expected of a successful assessment, they will be much more likely to produce successful results.
