Basenji

Basenjis are one of the few non-barking dogs recognized by the AKC. Rather than the standard bark, the Basenji makes a yodel sound. Depending on the excitement level, they may also crow, growl, or howl. This breed is muscular but small, weighing 20-26 pounds and standing 15-17 inches tall. The coat of this dog is short and fine with colors of black, copper, white, tan, or any combination of those. The Basenji cleans itself like a cat, so no grooming is needed. There is little shedding with this breed making this a good choice for allergy sufferers.

The Ji can be reserved but will respond well to its human family if handled often while young. This is an affectionate dog who likes to please. Because of their high energy level, the Ji does well with children. This dog needs a long brisk walk daily in addition to other playtime. The Basenji prefers the company of dogs of the same breed. They are happiest when living with another Basenji. Because this breed is non-barking, they are not watchdogs. This dog likes to chew, so providing toys for them is important. It is best to not use a wire fence with a Ji. This dog can easily climb over one. Obedience training will satisfy the mental stimulation that is required for this a Basenji. A Basenji does not like wet weather, so care should be taken to avoid outside activities during rain showers. If a Ji is not able to exercise each day, he may exhibit bad behavior. The life expectancy of this breed is 10-12 years. If not exercised regularly, they are prone to become fat and lazy. In addition, some lines show Fanconi's syndrome, progressive retinal atrophy, intestinal issues, and eye problems.

Drawings of the Basenji have been found on Egyptian tombs and wall drawings dating over five thousand years. The Basenji has been used as a guide in Africa and for catching game. This dog is listed in the Hound category by the AKC.
