Benito Mussolini

Benito Amilcare Andrea Mussolini was an Italian politician and has been credited as being one of the creators of fascism.

He was born July 29, 1883, in a town called Dovia di Predappio in the province of Forli. His father, a socialist, named him after a trio of prominent socialist leaders (Benito Juarez, Andrea Costa, and Amilcare Cipriani).

In 1902 he immigrated to Switzerland in order to avoid serving in the military. It was during his time there that he became involved in the Italian socialist movement.

A staunch supporter of socialism for most of his life, he eventually came to see it as a failure by 1919. This led him to create the Italian Combat Squad or Fasci Italiani di Combattimento. Within two years the party would grow and be renamed the National Fascist Party in 1921. That year he was elected to the Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Parliament.

His ascension to real power came a year in later in 1922 when he led a coup against Prime Minister Luigi Facta. Mussolini had the support of the military, businesses, and the liberals so King Victor Emmanuel II handed control over to him.

During the first few years he pretended to favor democracy, although he envisioned himself in charge of a totalitarian state. From 1925-27 he did away with any constitutional restraints on his power so that he could create the police state that he wanted.

In the process, he did complete a number of public works projects, but he would still be more known for his actions surrounding WWII. After supporting the English and France in the `30s he joined the Axis with Germany and Japan on June 10, 1940.

Within three years, the tide had turned severely against Italy. Hitler refused to help Mussolini protect Italy from looming Allied forces. At this time, he had begun to lose favor and was removed from his position of authority by the Grand Council of Fascism.

German forces rescued him from prison. Following that he ruled over the Italian Social Republic (sections of Italy not Allied-occupied). He tried to flee the country when the war was nearly over, but was caught and executed on April 28, 1945. He was 61.
