Bobcats

Bobcats are the smallest of the big cat family and are a cousin of the lynx. They are common throughout southern Canada, the continental United States, and northern Mexico. Their name is derived from their bobbed tail which, unlike most cats, is short and stubby. They are about twice the size of a domestic house cat weighing between 13 to 35 lbs. Their soft coat is light brown with black markings. Their hearing and vision are extremely sharp, as is their sense of smell. They are agile climbers and can also swim, although they prefer not to. Their hind legs are strong, muscular and are longer than the front legs which allows it to leap high in the air when grabbing prey.

They are constantly on the move in search of food and will travel several miles a day but always follow the same route within their territory. They do most of their hunting at night and feed mainly on hares and cotton-tail rabbits, but will add rodents and deer to their diet if necessary. They are also elusive and are rarely seen. They are extremely adaptable and can thrive in most habitats which may include forests, swamps, deserts, and areas that are close to human populations. This adaptability accounts for their success at survival.

They are solitary animals and will pair up long enough to mate. The female gives birth to two to four kittens every two years. They live in a well-marked territory where they maintain several dens that they use as they move within their territory in search of food. Their natural predators include mountain lions, coyotes, wolves and large birds of prey.

The bobcat is still hunted and trapped in many areas for their soft fur, and in Mexico they are killed by farmers to protect their farm animals. However, unlike other cats, their population is thriving and is not threatened. The fact that they are rather elusive and can adapt well to various habitats may also account for their strong survival. They can live 13 to 15 years in the wild.
