Cheek Piercing

A cheek piercing is located straight through the cheek. It is generally positioned to look like a dimple. This piercing is more common with women but is also for men. Cheek piercings can cause many problems. The first problem is they usually cause permanent scarring. It is possible to rupture a saliva gland during the piercing. Saliva glands can not be seen so they can not be avoided. If one is ruptured, saliva will leak out of the hole. This will eventually heal but will take time. Another problem is lymphatic tissue buildup. This will create small bumps around the piercing that will need to be drained after they are healed. This is a very sensitive area. They jewelry used is a straight barbell and should be made of titanium, surgical steel, or 14 to 18 karat gold.

The healing time for a cheek piercing ranges between 6 and 10 months. Proper aftercare will keep the healing time down. The inside of your mouth and outside on your cheek will need to be cleaned differently. For the inside of the mouth, Biotene, an alcohol free mouth wash is suggested to be used 2 to 3 times a day. Sea salt rinses with warm water are also beneficial. For the outside of your cheek, a gentle soap diluted with water is best. The cheek should be cleaned 1 to 2 times a day. Remove crust buildup with warm water and a cotton ball. After a few days, begin to rotate the jewelry while cleaning. Hands need to be thoroughly washed before touching the piercing.

It's important that the chosen parlor is safe and sterile. If the parlor is not sterile it is possible to contract infections such as HIV and hepatitis. Since cheek piercings are uncommon and dangerous, it is important that the piercing technician has performed this piercing before or has one of their own. The first step at the parlor is paper work stating the piercing you are getting, the risks and aftercare instructions. If you are under 16 years old, a guardian will need to sign approval.

The instruments, jewelry and technician need to be sterile. Some parlors use reusable instruments that have previously been sterilized. Most will use fresh, single use instruments. These instruments and jewelry need to be in sealed packages that will be opened in front of you and the technician should always wear gloves.
