Dental Care Practitioners

When we think about doctors and the medical field the first image that typically pops into mind is that of ambulances, hospitals, and ER waiting rooms littered with patients. What we tend to overlook is that the person that we are all supposed to see once every six months is also a member of the medical practitioner family-- the dentist.

Dental care practitioners are healthcare workers that are responsible for treating issues having to do with oral hygiene. This can include such things as cleanings, fluoride treatments, braces, disease prevention and so much more; if it has to do with the mouth (oral cavity) than dental care practitioners are involved.

Good dental hygiene is something that is widely considered imperative for good overall health, hence the perception that people must visit their dentist every six months. Failure to do so can result in a number of different maladies that can affect overall health, not just the mouth, even if a person has good oral hygiene habits. This makes the work that dental care practitioners do very important to a person's overall well-being.

Dentists are the primary dental care practitioners and the face of the specialty. However, just like every other doctor, they can't do the job alone. Also considered dental care practitioners are assistants, hygienists, technicians and therapists.

Also like other doctors, it is not easy to become a dentist. Interested people are required to complete an undergraduate degree program followed by another four years of education at a dental school; this will qualify a person to include the DDS (doctor of dental surgery) or DMD (doctor of dental medicine) at the end of their name. Should they want to further specialize more education is necessary.

Nine specialties are recognized by the American Dental Association. General dentistry is the most common next to orthodontics (improper bite; the doctor that gives you braces). Endodontics works with the tissue surrounding the tooth root and the pulp. Periodontics involves the supporting structures of teeth. Pediatric dentistry is geared towards the dental health of children. Also included are oral and maxillofacial pathology, surgery, and radiology.

The support positions, on the other hand, have a variety of different educational requirements. Assistants do not have to complete a specific degree plan, but they do have to pass an exam and be licensed. Hygienists, on the other hand, can be hired with an associate's, bachelors, masters, or a certificate.
