Dining

Dining implies something more than the simple act of ingesting food; dining denotes a formality, an experience, the savoring and enjoying of a meal and the accompanying beverages. Dining is most often a social occasion, whether it occurs in the home or out at a restaurant or social club. Dining may refer to a casual meal eaten at the kitchen table or a sophisticated and structured prix fixe dinner at a restaurant. Dining differs from culture to culture, and is an activity rife with traditions--from what foods are traditionally eaten on certain days or holidays to how the food is served and what takes place before, after and during eating.

Dining certainly engages our gustatory and olfactory senses (what we taste and what we smell), but dining also involves our other senses. A meal engages our sense of touch--the crunch of a cold salad, the warmth of a creamy soup, the heft of silverware. And certainly the presentation of food in dining is important--even the most casual meal will appeal more to us if it looks good. Dining is definitely about what we are eating and how it has been prepared, but a balanced dining experience is also about how the food is served and the atmosphere in which the dining takes place.

One element of dining is the tableware used. Tableware includes dishes, flatware or silverware, and serving utensils. Having a full set of dishes, whether those dishes are casual dinnerware or fine china, facilitates the creation of a home dining experience. A set of casual dinnerware may include plates, bowls and salad plates (glassware and stemware such as wine glasses are usually sold separately). Fine china sets often include plates, bowls, and a cup and saucer. Having the correct serving utensils and tableware makes it easy to serve food, and the use of fine china over casual dinnerware can elevate the dining experience. Wine glasses are necessary for the home entertainer, and are available in both glass and crystal. Setting a formal table includes the correct placement of silverware and dishes, and often the inclusion of a table cloth, linen napkins and a centerpiece.
