Family Medicine

An important decision for any family is to figure out what sort of doctor they want to see whenever someone becomes ill. The choice is not necessarily as simple as it may seem. Nowadays there are specialists that focus on caring for certain people (i.e. pediatricians) or things (i.e. endocrinologists). Going to specialists can be difficult. In some cases it is difficult to find one in a given area, and since there are often few such specialists getting appointment can be difficult.

That is why many people like to take a more generalized and simple approach when it comes to healthcare. Rather than see specialist or different doctors for different members of the family everyone goes to the same practitioner. This is what is done in family medicine.

Family medicine is a subdivision of primary care. The focus of it is to provide care and services to all members of the family no matter the age, sex, malady, or part of the body. Its general, all-encompassing style of treatment is intended to give the healthcare practitioner a more comprehensive view into the life of the patient and community. The hope is to be better equipped to prevent disease and promote a healthy lifestyle by being aware of the big picture as it relates to the patient.

Family medicine practitioners used to also be called general practitioners; a term that many countries still apply to the specialty.

The educational demands are great on future family doctors since they need to be able to treat a wide variety of things as it pertains to the needs of the family. They will usually receive training in several areas and for all population groups including: infants; elderly; ear, nose and throat; emergency; mental health; bones and joints, eyes; minor surgeries, and so much more.

An obvious detractor to using a family medicine doctor is that they do not have as in-depth knowledge as someone who specializes in something. However, the benefit to using one is that the ongoing relationship between patient and physician results in better health and lower healthcare costs over time.

Nearly 25 percent of all doctor visits are made to family medicine doctors, but in time that frequency could decrease simply because there are not enough doctors to go around. Many med schools have dropped the program, while few have picked it up. This is likely due to the pull that specialties have with higher salaries and more prestige in the medical community.

It is not uncommon for family medicine practitioners to make as low as $110,000 and as much as $204,000 (averaging around $140,000). While that may seem like a lot to the average person when you consider the cost of medical school and the amount of loans most students collect it is not as impressive as it seems.
