Improve PC Performance

The necessity of personal computers (PCs) in both professional and personal settings has reached an all-time high. Unfortunately, many computer users are unfamiliar with technical aspects of their PC's hardware and software. This has led to the creation of a massive tech support industry for helping users with their computer problems. By following a few technical tips, however, users can improve PC performance significantly and reduce their chances of experiencing serious computer-related problems.

First, make sure that you have antivirus software (preferably a version that detects spyware and other forms of malware) installed on your PC. Questionable websites are riddled with fake advertisements designed to re-direct your PC to harmful websites that can steal personal information and use it in unlawful ways. Viruses, spyware, and malware can all lead to vastly decreased operational speed because their processes sap power from your system's resources. In order to combat these threats and improve PC performance, run a weekly antivirus scan. Reputable antivirus providers often make a free version of their software available online for trial downloads. Higher tiers of the software programs offer increased protection but typically require a subscription fee.

Disk defragmentation is another important aspect of basic PC maintenance. As you move, copy, and delete files on your computer, gaps can be left behind in the hard drive and overall operational speed drops. By running your disk defragmentation tool regularly, you can compress those gaps, stabilize your hard drive, and improve PC performance. Many modern operating systems (including versions of Windows) are configured to run the disk defragmentation tool automatically at a specific time. You may schedule the disk defragmentation process to run during a time when you aren't using your computer. As long as the computer is on, the process will run and keep your hard drive running smoothly.

In addition to fine-tuning techniques mentioned above, you may also wish to consider replacing certain components in your computer system. This undoubtedly will improve PC performance significantly, but you must be careful to check for compatibility very carefully. Many parts--such as the central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU, or video card), and random access memory (RAM)--will only work with specific motherboards. The good news is that modern computer components are modular, so consumers may put them together themselves with few problems. There are also a vast number of online tutorials showing replacement techniques for all major computer components. If you don't feel comfortable upgrading computer components yourself, many electronics vendors keep skilled technical workers on staff. They will be able to field questions about computer upgrades and some may even be willing to perform the service.
