Kyoto Protocol

The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement among 38 nations around the globe that took place in 1997. Amongst the many goals of the Kyoto Protocol, the singular most important one was to reduce greenhouse gases in a methodical way over a period of time. The Kyoto Protocol took place during cooperative talks that involved the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The reduction of the individual greenhouse gases bound all of the participating nations to legally reduce the mentioned emissions within a precise time frame.

Signing the Kyoto Protocol was disallowed by the Bush Administration in 2001, even though representatives of the United States government continued to attend COP's (conference of the parties) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. However, during these meetings, representative of the United States played no part in any discussions related to the Kyoto Protocol. The Bush administration's platform and policy on climate change relied upon voluntary steps originating from the United States, itself to reduce carbon emissions. The goal was set at a 10 year, 18% reduction in greenhouse gas intensity by the Bush administration. However, the United States' neighbor to the north, Canada is a participating member of the Kyoto Protocol and has agreed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions below 1990 levels by 2012. There is some discontent in the Canadian Conservative government wing with the Kyoto Protocol and they, too, are seeking our internal methods of greenhouse gas control.

Although the United States did not agree to the terms of the Kyoto Protocol it helped bring awareness to the many citizens of the United States and the world for the need to create other methods to reduce pollution, clean our waterways, and seek innovative, and energy efficient methods to help the U.S. continue to move ahead into the 21^st century.
