Made from Grains:

Alcohol can be made from many substances and it's one of the oldest recreational drugs in the world. Grain alcohol, or alcohol made from grains, is produced by fermentation and then distillation of the grain. Grain alcohol is also known as pure alcohol, ethyl alcohol, or ethanol, but most often it is simply called alcohol or spirits. Alcohol is most commonly known for producing intoxicating effects by drinking beverages containing it, but it also used in thermometers as fuel and as a solvent in industrial atmospheres.

Ethanol is the main psychoactive ingredient in Alcohol beverages that has depressing effects on the central nervous system. Alcohol beverages vary considerably in ethanol content. Most Alcohol beverages are classified as fermented beverages or distilled beverages, or those that are made by the concentrating ethanol from the process of distillation. The amount of ethanol content, or how intoxicating the drink will be, is measured in terms of the volume fraction of ethanol in the beverage, which is expressed either as a percentage of in Alcohol proof units.

Grains, like rye and corn, have been used for centuries in the production of alcohol. Fermentation is the biological process in which yeasts consume natural sugars (like glucose and fructose) and convert them into cellular energy which in turn produces both ethanol and carbon dioxide. The amount of ethyl alcohol in the substance depends on how the grain is fermented. For instance, in beer, the ethyl alcohol content is low. When a grain reaches a higher ethyl content level during fermentation, it is then brewed and produces a stronger, much more potent clear liquid.

Alcohols made from grain are made across the world, each drink unique to the country, climate, and culture in which it is made. Awamori is a grain alcohol made with rice that is indigenous to Okinawa, Japan, and horilka is a traditional Ukrainian drink made with wheat. The history of alcohols made from grains is extensive and much of it is not clear-cut but instead folklore and legend.
