Men's Shorts

Shorts are an article of clothing that are similar to pants in that they begin at the waist and cover each leg separately, but shorts end around the knees and are generally much more casual than pants. Shorts are popular in warm weather and other situations wherein it's unnecessary to cover the entire leg. Shorts come in a huge range of materials and styles today, and they're popular among members of both genders and all age groups. Like pants, many shorts feature belt loops, a fly and pockets.

Initially shorts were worn throughout the United States and Europe during the 19^th and early 20^th centuries by younger boys. When boys got older, normally around puberty, they would don pants and trousers rather than shorts, so the garment was often associated with young boys. By the mid-20^th century shorts were becoming acceptable to be worn by men in certain situations such as outdoor sports, but they were not yet widely accepted. Toward the end of the 20^th century shorts became acceptable for grown men to wear outdoors during warm weather, although some people still consider them to be too casual for many situations.

There are many different styles of shorts. Board shorts are a combination of shorts and a bathing suit, and they're popular as both beachwear and daily wear, especially by people such as surfers. Cargo shorts are normally long and baggy and feature additional pockets. Jorts are jean shorts and are generally considered far too casual for many situations. Today's style of shorts for men tends to reach below the knees and can extend as far down as the calves. Like pants, many shorts are worn very baggy and low on the hips by young men. Shorts are still a somewhat controversial piece of clothing today, but they've increased in their acceptance recently. When wearing shorts, it's important to gauge the type of shorts that would or would not be appropriate for the situation.
