Nashville - Five Must See Sights

Situated on the Cumberland River, Nashville is the capital of Tennessee and the most populous metropolitan area in the state. It is nicknamed "Music City" due to its prominence in the country music business. If you are going to Nashville, here are five must-see sites:

Grand Ole Opry. Not surprisingly, this country music icon is the number one attraction in Nashville. The Grand Ole Opry began in 1925 as a radio broadcast. Today it is called "the country's most famous stage." It showcases acts ranging from the legends of country music to promising new stars.

Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum. Established in 1967, this well-known attraction chronicles the greatest people and events in country music history. Visitors learn about the history of the genre as they listen to the melodies, watch historic film clips, and take part in lively exhibits.

Belle Meade Plantation. This Victorian-style mansion is a stately and elegant reminder of life in the ante-bellum South. The columns still bear bullet marks from a Civil War skirmish in the front yard, just 11 years after the mansion was built in 1853. The 30-acre grounds are said to make for a beautiful stroll. The site houses a collection of antique carriages.

General Jackson Showboat. Take a cruise on the Cumberland River on a 300-foot paddle-wheel riverboat. Besides the vistas, you will be treated to a variety of music and engaging entertainment in the two-story Victorian Theater, plus a mouth-watering Southern-style dinner.

The Hermitage, Home of President Andrew Jackson. The residence of President Andrew Jackson from 1804 until his death in 1845, this is now a National Historic Landmark situated on 1,120 acres. Most of the mansion's contents are originals, making it a standard-bearer for authenticity in historical preservation. There are also a presidential museum and farming activities on-site.
