Ojos Azules Cat

Meaning "blue eyes" in Spanish, Ojos Azules is a name which tells the cat's history very well. Part of a feral colony in New Mexico in 1984, the mother of the foundation was a tortoiseshell female named Cornflower. As late as the 1990's, there were only a very few were available. Breeding was limited when it was determined that the blue-eyed genes were also responsible for severe health anomalies in certain litters. Add to this the fact that only fifty percent of kittens in a litter had the sought after blue eyes, and the Ojos Azules cats are indeed rare.

The sapphire blue eyes, more pronounced than even those of the Siamese, were determined to be dominant and are not linked to coat color. The gene causing the blue eyes may be a mutation that appears spontaneously across cat breeds. For example, the same, sapphire blue eyes were seen in another mutation in Australia, where Ojos Azules could not have been imported. The gene responsible for the blue eyes if homozygous, or paired, may lead to cranial defects and mortality in new litters. However, if the gene is heterozygous, there are no anomalies. Therefore, these sapphire blue-eyed cats are out crossed to domestic short and longhairs.

The Ojos Azules cat is a medium-sized cat with a sweet look and, of course, striking eyes. Its head is triangular in shape. Easy to groom, the coat of the Azules is short, and soft to the touch. All colors are accepted, except for solid white; however, white patches on the face--including the mouth, nose, and jaws, toes of the back paws, and the tip of the tail are permitted. Due to the limited quantity of these cats, their personalities are not known, other than being friendly, active, and affectionate.

These sapphire blue-eyed cats were recognized by the International Cat Society (TICA) in 1991, and current development of a standard and monitoring of genetic testing is underway by TICA. The breed is limited to a few breeders who are working with TICA to both develop the standard for the breed and resolve the genetic health issues.
