Outpatient Services

Outpatient services are hospital services that are provided to patients who have not been admitted to the hospital. These patients are not assigned a hospital bed and do not have to stay overnight in the hospital. Outpatient services include many of the same procedures as inpatient services, including diagnosis, treatment, surgery, rehabilitation and consultation.

Though hospitals work hard to make sure their facilities are comfortable, a hospital stay can add another stressful element to an already stressful situation. For this reason, most patients chose outpatient procedures whenever possible. Outpatient services are usually also less costly than inpatient services because the hospital does not need to house and feed you.

Outpatient services may be offered through hospitals or through outpatient services centers. These service centers often specialize in a specific area of medicine. Theoretically, this means that you receive care from a highly specialized staff that has gained a lot of practice performing the same small group of procedures.

In most cases, there is no reason for the patient to lie in a hospital bed while waiting for test results to come back, so outpatient services are often the best choice for diagnostics. Diagnostic services offered on an outpatient basis may include laboratory testing, imaging scans and physical examination. Depending on the diagnosis that is reached outpatient diagnostics may result in admission to the hospital.

Patients can often be treated on an outpatient basis as well. Common treatments include chemotherapy, some forms of dialysis and even surgery. Outpatient surgery, also known as ambulatory surgery, has become more feasible as technology has advanced. Many surgeries can now be performed on an outpatient basis as long as the patient is not at high risk for complications.

An outpatient setting is often ideal for rehabilitation and consultation services, because the patient might only need to be seen for a few hours each week. Drug and alcohol rehabilitation, counseling services, diet and nutrition counseling and physical and occupational therapy are common outpatient rehabilitation and consultation services.
