Pinot Noir Grape

Pinot noir is a black grape used to make red wine varietals and blends. The name "pinot noir" comes from the French words for "pine" and "black." Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world. The grapes are mostly thought of as being grown in the Burgundy region of France. Wines produced from pinot noir grapes are prized by both critics and collectors, but the grape is very temperamental and is difficult to cultivate and transform into good wine.

Pinot noir vines thrive in cooler climates. Pinot noir grapes are grown today throughout the world, and vines can be found in Australia, Canada, Germany, the United States, and many other countries.

Pinot noir vines are usually less vigorous than other red wine grapes such as syrah or cabernet sauvignon. The grape cluster is tight and is vaguely shaped like a pine cone. Pinot noir grapes are very sensitive to wind, frost, cropping levels, pruning techniques and soil types, which are all parts of the reasons why the grape is so difficult to cultivate. The thin skin of pinot noir grapes also makes it susceptible to rot as well as several other harmful issues. While some clones of pinot noir grow much more easily, generally pinot noir vines are accepted as being one of the harder grapes to grow properly.

Pinot noir is considered to be a romantic, sexy dark wine, and perhaps some of this mystique comes from how temperamental the grape is. Pinot noir is full bodied, and its flavors are reminiscent of berries, tomatoes, cherries, and plums. It can feature an earthy or wood-like flavor, which depends upon the growing conditions as well as the ways in which the wine was made. Pinot noir is known to pair well with a wide variety of foods, especially salmon, grilled meats or dishes that feature mushrooms.
