Roses

Roses are a variety of woody perennial that grows in shrubs or as climbing or trailing plants. There are more than 100 species of rose, many with decorative, multi-colored, sweet-smelling petals. Roses are often a fixture in seasonal bouquets as well as home gardens, though they often require extensive care.

Rose petals are typically large, with many species cultivated specifically for their flowers' decorative use. There is also tremendous variety in petal color depending on the species of rose, ranging from deep reds to yellows. Rose petal color and scent have also been the focus of much hybridization. Stems are often covered with prickles, which are commonly misclassified as thorns. While thorns are modified extensions of branches or stems, rose prickles are actually coarse, hair-like extensions of the epidural cells that cover the stem.

Culturally, roses have been used in courtship rituals in many countries for centuries. Different meanings have been attached to the number or shade of given roses, though the significance of such code has gone through a number of transitions. Present commercial cultivation of roses focuses on producing specimens for holiday bouquets.

For the home gardener interested in cultivating a rose garden, it is important to remember a few things. First, darker roses generally have more fragrance than pale varieties. If the "traditional" rose scent is a priority, pink and red roses are the suggested colors. And when shopping around for rose hybrids, remember that roses with more petals on their blossoms typically produce more fragrance.

Rose care has also developed a reputation as overly difficult, but depending on the variety, upkeep can be quite manageable. Most rose bushes require some degree of pruning in the spring to encourage new growth. It is also a good idea to cease pruning and feeding roses in late summer, as new growth will be easily damaged by frost. Climbing varieties of roses are especially vulnerable to drying winds. Wrap them in thin plastic sheeting to prevent damage over the winter. Finally, a ground freeze means that the rose bush has to rely on its own internal water stores--a good pre-winter watering can help the rose bush make it to spring.
