Sierra Nevada Brewing Company

The Sierra Nevada Brewing Company was established by two homebrewers in 1980; Ken Grossman and Paul Camusi started the company, and it's still located in Chico, California, today. Behind Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is the second-top selling craft beer in the United States. The brewery is consistently one of the largest and the most popular throughout the country, and it's also known for its increasingly green practices. In 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency honored Sierra Nevada Brewing Company as a "Green Business of the Year" due to its sustainability practices; the brewery uses solar panels to power itself, uses discarded cooking oil from its brewpub to create biodiesel for delivery trucks as well as a number of other green practices.

In 1979 Grossman and Camusi decided to grow their homebrewing hobby into a larger brewery, and they chose the name Sierra Nevada due to the location as well as their love of hiking the Sierra Nevada Mountains. The brewery's first beer sold was Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, and they followed shortly after with Celebration IPA. For the first several years, the brewery struggled a bit both with finances and marketing, but by the end of the `80s, the beer had found its market. The early brewery with pieced together equipment was replaced with a larger, 100-barrel brewhouse that featured higher quality equipment and later a brewpub, which is called the Sierra Nevada Taproom and Restaurant. About 10 years later the brewery added a music venue called "The Big Room" which features a large variety of musical acts. Today Sierra Nevada Brewing Company is owned solely by Ken Grossman as Paul Camusi retired, and the company employs nearly 450 people.

Today the American craft beer movement is thriving, and many consider Sierra Nevada to be an important early pioneer in the movement. To celebrate the company's 30^th anniversary in 2010, Sierra Nevada partnered with brewers from companies such as Anchor Steam and the now-defunct New Albion Brewing Company to create collaborations. Sierra Nevada sells its Pale Ale, Porter, Stout, Kellerweis Hefeweizen and Torpedo "Extra" IPA year round in addition to several special release beers every year.
