Socialism

Ideologies are typically centered on a core belief of some kind. For socialism, the core concept is a belief that the economy and all means of production for it should be owned and operated by the state with the distribution of what it made controlled by the state as well.

Socialists want to take away the idea of competition within an economy. They don't think that competition will drive the economy towards success. Rather than trust people to want to outperform each other, they think the key to a successful economy is to have a central authority like the government (proletariat) controlling the economy and optimizing resources for optimal production value. They think that capitalism allows the wealthy to exploit the poor, and that a capitalist economy keeps the majority of people down, causing a hard distinction between the classes and focusing power in the hands of a select few. They believe that a system by which the state controls the economy will allow for the people to have the freedom to find out what they are best at. The state will take that knowledge and use it to optimize production.

Socialism is more of an economic system than a political one, but it is often used to describe political systems used to obtain socialist goals. One of the most well-known forms of it is Marxism, named for 19^th century philosopher Karl Marx and created in conjunction with Fredrick Engels. They believed that socialism is a stepping stone between capitalism and communism. He thought that the people would want to escape the conditions of wage-slavery inherent in capitalism for a state-led society. However, making the jump from capitalism to communism would be too extreme so socialism would be the step in between. For this to happen though, the working class would have to take control of the government so that the focus could then shift off of a capitalist centered one. The basic concepts that they promoted were based off of the Paris Commune, a brief moment in 1871 when the poor and working class of Paris took control of the government.
