Stemware & Cocktail

Drinks are meant to quench our thirst and be enjoyed, but if they are not served properly--just like food--the joy they can bring can be compromised. Certain drinks need to be in special glasses in order to be enjoyed at their best, especially cocktails. Many types of drinks are meant to be in special glasses.

While there are numerous types of these special glasses, they are all referred to as stemware.

The reason behind the name is rather simple. The bowl that holds the drink, is separated from the base (called the foot) of the glass by a stem. This is meant to give users something to hold onto other than the bowl itself. Basically, the reason for it is so that the body heat coming from the users hand does not affect the temperature of the drink.

Each different kind is made a little different in order to put the focus on what is special about each. Red wine glasses have a larger rim so that the aroma can be enjoyed before drinking. White wine glasses have longer stems to protect the wine from your body temperature. Champagne flutes are long and narrow in order to show off the bubbles.

Other kinds of popular stemware include cocktail glasses (i.e. martini glasses and margarita glasses), brandy sniffers, and cordial glasses. Brandy sniffers are like red wine glasses with their open bowls and large rims, but tend to have short stems since temperature is not considered a problem. Cordial glasses are like small wine glasses that are used for after dinner type drinks.

Stemware can be made out of a wide variety of materials. Many bars and clubs will go with plastic that they can throw away. Glass is also commonly used; lead crystal is used as well for its appearance and durability.
