Telecommuting

Working at home, or "telecommuting," is becoming more and more commonplace. It saves the company the costs of rent and utilities. It saves the employee commuting time and costs. And it allows for greater geographic flexibility--a team can be dispersed around the country. But telecommuting successfully requires a new skill set. The challenges are different from the traditional office. Here are some tips for making it a success:

Space. Working from home still requires an office--and an office atmosphere. It should be a quiet, separate room with a door, not the den or dining room. You need the right equipment, including comfortable office furniture, and proper ergonomics--computer keyboard at the right level, good lighting, etc.

Time. Keep a regular schedule. Your co-workers and clients need to know when you are available, and your family and friends need to know when you are not. Take regular breaks for a snack, lunch, exercise, or to stretch.

Distractions. Explain your work routine to your family and friends and tell them that you don't want to be interrupted until break or quitting time unless it's an emergency. Telecommuting should not be a substitute for childcare when children are young.

Variety. One of the advantages--but potentially also a drawback--of working from home is that you don't have to leave the house. You could stay inside, alone and inactive all day. To avoid such an unhealthy routine, plan to get some exercise every day, have lunch with a friend, take vacations, etc.

End of day routine. One way to maintain the boundary between work and home life is to have an end-of-day routine. This lets your family know you are finished work. For example, turn off your computer so you won't be tempted to keep checking it. Open your office door and turn off the light. Greet your family and perhaps have a ritual with them, such as a cup of tea with your spouse, talking to your children about their day, or playing a sport or riding bikes with them.
