The New Testament

The New Testament comprises 27 books of Christian writings which are considered by Christians to be sacred and divinely inspired, and make up the second part of the Christian Bible. These 27 books are divided into the Gospels, which recount the life, teachings and death and resurrection of Jesus; the Acts of the Apostles, which describes the early church and the early followers of Jesus; the Epistles, which offer instruction and counsel for followers of Jesus; and the Apocalypse (the Book of Revelation), a book of prophecy. The New Testament is a source of Christian teachings and theology, and is used in various Christian liturgies and religious celebrations. The texts are written by different writers, and are generally believed to have been written in the 1^st and 2^nd century C.E. Many scholars date the writings of the New Testament to before 70 A.D., because the writings make no mention of the destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem.

The Gospels include the Gospel According to Matthew, the Gospel According to Mark, the Gospel According to Luke, and the Gospel According to John. The Gospels attributed to Matthew, Mark and Luke are known as the Synoptic Gospels and contain similar elements and are similarly structured. The Gospel According to John differs from the other three and includes teachings and miracles not present in the others. The Acts of the Apostles is generally to be written by the same author that wrote the Gospel According to Luke, and functions as a continuation of the narrative in the Gospel According to Luke.

The Epistles are grouped into the Pauline Epistles, the Pastoral Epistles, and the General Epistles. The Pauline Epistles are attributed to the Apostle Paul, although the authorship of many of these epistles is disputed. The Pauline Epistles are written to Christians in specific locations (including the Corinthians, the Thessalonians, the Galatians, the Philippians, and others). These epistles address the concerns facing these early Christian communities. The Pastoral Epistles are also attributed to the Apostle Paul and are addressed to the leaders of the early church and include writings on Christian living and teachings. The General Epistles have several different authors, and the authorship of many of these letters is disputed. The Book of Revelation is sometimes attributed to the Apostle John (the same author of the Gospel) or to John of Patmos.
