Tongue Piercing

A tongue piercing is located vertically through the center of the tongue. There are also horizontal tongue piercings and double tongue piercings. This is a unisex piercing. The jewelry used is a stainless steel barbell.

A tongue piercing takes 2 to 4 months to heal but will feel healed as early as 2 weeks. Immediately after the piercing and the next morning, eat ice for a few hours. Do not suck on the ice, let it melt. This will keep swelling down. Use a non-alcohol mouth wash after every time eating for 7 days. Do not brush the piercing when brushing teeth. Every morning and night, check the balls to make sure they are tight. If one is swallowed, it will pass in a day or two. Go back to the piercing parlor to get another ball. After 2 weeks, return to the parlor to have a shorter bar put in.

Tongue piercings are no more risky than an ear piercing but can have some other problems. The most common problems are infection, bleeding, and damage to the mouth and teeth. Biting the jewelry can chip teeth. Another problem is receding gums. This is due to repeatedly rubbing the jewelry behind the teeth.

It is important to make sure the piercing parlor you choose is safe and sterile. If the piercing parlor is not sterile it is possible to contract infections such as hepatitis and HIV. The first step at the parlor is paperwork to read and complete, stating the risks, what piercing you will be getting, and aftercare instructions. If you are 16 years of age of younger, a parent will need to sign approval.

When it is time to get the piercing, the tools, jewelry and technician need to be sterile. Some parlors will use reusable tools that have already been sterilized. Others will use fresh, single use instruments. These instruments and the jewelry need to be in sealed packaging that will be opened in front of you and the technician should always wear gloves.
