Tracey Chapman

Tracy Chapman, a Cleveland, Ohio native, is a multi-talented singer and songwriter whose career has made historic contributions to the world of music, and the world at large. She became active in the entertainment industry in 1988, playing in local clubs.

However, her first album, `Tracy Chapman', released in 1988, hit number on the United Kingdom and U.S. charts, specifically propelled by singles like, "Fast Car" and "Talkin' Bout a Revolution". She ushered in a conversion leading towards female singer-songwriters that included top musical artists like; Sarah MacLachlan, Ani DiFranco, and Tori Amos. Due to the meteoric success of this first album, Tracy Chapman was nominated for seven Grammy Awards at the 31^st Grammy Awards event. This album alone has garnered a number of well-deserved nods of recognition. It was ranked at number 10 on the "100 Greatest Albums of the 80's" by Rolling Stone magazine and in 2003, was ranked at 261 by Rolling Stone on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time roll call.

Between the years of 1988 and 2008, Tracy Chapman released seven albums, besides her debut album, "Tracy Chapman". They were, respectively; "Crossroads" "Matters of the Heart" "New Beginning" "Telling Stories" "Let it Rain" "Where You Live" and "Our Bright Future". She has also collaborated with a number of other musical greats, such as; Eric Clapton, BB King, Buddy Guy, Dave Matthews, and Pavarotti.

The Tracy Chapman story, though, is not only one of musical accomplishment; it is also one of social and political engagement. She is known for her consistent support of the Cleveland school system. Her music video spotlighting the important accomplishments of African-Americans in history is utilized by the Cleveland Public School System. She was also one of the many performers who appeared in tribute to The Nelson Mandela 70^th Birthday celebration that was held to benefit the South Africa Anti-Apartheid Movement.
