US Defense Department

One of the major concerns of any nation is the protection of its people, borders, and possessions. The task of coordinating the many entities that accomplish the task of preserving the national security of the United States falls to the U.S. Department of Defense (commonly known as the DOD).

The DOD did not officially come into being until 1949, but many of the pieces of it have been in existence since the early days of the nation (such as the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps).

A number of related departments have existed over the years. One of the original three departments was the War Department, created in 1789 along with the State and Treasury Departments. The Department of the Navy was created in 1798.

In an effort to better organize the defense of the nation, President Harry Truman signed the National Security Act of 1947. This created the National Military Establishment (NME) as well as other agencies that would eventually fall under the purview of the DOD. The Act also created the U.S. Air Force and established the Department of the Air Force as part of the executive branch.

The three branches of the military (Army, Navy, and Air Force; the Marine Corps falls under the Navy) were placed under the control of the National Military Establishment. The position of Secretary of Defense was established to head up the NME. James V. Forrestal was confirmed as the first Secretary on September 17, 1947.

In 1949 an amendment was passed by Congress that renamed the NME the U.S. Department of Defense. The three main braches of the military (Army, Navy, and Air Force) no longer had Cabinet-level status of their own, and instead became represented by the Secretary of the Defense.

Leon Edward Panetta is the Secretary of Defense (as of January 2012), a position he has held since July 1, 2011. He is the 23^rd person to serve in that capacity.
