A vasectomy is a permanent form of male birth control. It is a very straight forward procedure with very few risks. Since it is permanent, it needs to be certain that the man is finished having children.



There are multiple steps to getting a vasectomy sense it is a permanent for of birth control. The doctor will need to meet the patient a few times. If the man is in a relationship, it is suggested that his partner goes to the initial appointment as well. The doctor and patient will discuss things such as the possibility of fathering a child in the future, the partners feelings, risks and other forms of birth control. Before the procedure the doctor may have the patient arrange a ride home, take aspirin, or wash the genitals. The procedure is out patient and uses a local anesthetic. It should take between 20 and 30 minutes. The area will be numbed and a small incision will be made in the scrotum. The vas deferens, tube that carries the semen, will be located and a small section will be pulled to the incision. The vas deferens will then be cut and the ends will be tied in knots. The incision will only require one or two stitches. The procedure is repeated on the other side.



A vasectomy is greater than 99% effective. The advantages include; safer and cheaper then tubal ligation, fast recovery, and out patient. The disadvantages include; reversal surgeries don't always work, and it can have complications. The risks include; swelling, blood in semen, infection, bleeding, bruising, blood clot in scrotum, and chronic pain. The cost of a vasectomy varies between $350 and $1,000.
