Monopoly and Scrabble
Monopoly and Scrabble are undoubtedly two of the most popular board games today. Both games were invented during the Great Depression as a way for unemployed people to pass the time.

Alfred Ward Butts, an unemployed architect from Poughkeepsie, New York, was passionate about games and words. In 1931, he started developing a new game. In 1948, after refinements and changes to the game, Butts introduced Scrabble to the public. Today, Scrabble is played in 121 countries with more than 100 million Scrabble sets sold.

Charles B. Darrow of Germantown, Penn., invented Monopoly in 1934. After being rejected by Parker Brothers, Darrow sold handmade sets of the game that soon became a hit with the public. Parker Brothers then reconsidered, and the rest is history. More than 200 million Monopoly sets have been sold worldwide. Interestingly, the longest Monopoly game ever played lasted 70 days.

Today, a number of versions of Monopoly pepper the game market. For example, many tourist locales create their own versions of Monopoly based on their own towns and attractions.

More recently, fun-loving inventors have developed board games such as Trivial Pursuit and Pictionary.
