The AKC recognized Bullmastiff is massive, weighing 110-130 pounds and standing 24-27 inches. This giant has a powerful built, but is not cumbersome or clumsy. The short dense coat comes in colors of red, brindle, or fawn. The coat is easy to groom requiring an occasional brushing. The Bullie is a light shedder.

The Bullmastiff is a good-natured and devoted guard dog. Bulls tend to be docile but will become fearless if provoked. Although unlikely to attack and bite, it will hold down an intruder. This breed is very tolerant of children and they crave human companionship. Because of the dog's size and power, it is important that obedience training take place while the dog is still young. The Bullie needs to be socialized at an early age around other people and dogs. This breed needs a firm Alpha human as the owner. If the dog believes that the owner is weak, it may become aggressive towards other dogs and timid around strangers. Care must be taken to not allow a dog younger than one to jump from high places. Knee and hip injuries are common with pups and should be avoided. Bulls tend to drool, slobber and snore. A moderate speed walk should be given daily. Though they are not high energy dogs, not receiving exercise can cause this breed to have bad behavior. The life expectancy of this breed is less than 10 years. They are prone to cancer, hip dysplasia, tumors, PRA bloat and boils on the lips.

The Bullmastiff is a cross between the Mastiff and the Bulldog. Originating from England, Bullmastiffs date back to 1795. An early job of the Bullies was to track down, tackle and hold poachers. Additional tasks have involved the Diamond Society of South Africa, and both military and police units. The AKC has this breed listed in the Working category.
