Facebook is a social networking site that was launched in February 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with his college roommates Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes. Facebook currently has more than 800 million active users worldwide, and more than 50-percent of Facebook users log on to the website every day. Facebook features a user profile with a list of interests and activities where a user can post photos, family relationships, videos and other information they believe others will be interested in knowing. A Facebook profile page is connected to a list of friends, and it can be set so that no one outside of these friends can see the page. Facebook is by far the most popular social network in the world, and its staggering growth continues every day.

Facebook began in 2004 after Zuckerberg's previous endeavor, Facemash, and was initially limited to just Harvard students. Soon the site expanded to other schools in the Boston area and Ivy League Universities, and by 2006 Facebook opened registration to anyone over the age of 13. In October 2007 Microsoft purchased a 1.6-percent stake of Facebook for $240 million. As of June 2011 Facebook became the most visited website in the world, and it's valued at nearly $50 billion, with that value continuing to grow daily. Facebook has been identified as possibly going public in 2013, although that's up in the air.

Facebook has become ubiquitous for many people in their daily lives; many use the service to share important updates about their lives, share photos of family and friends, invite people to events and many other activities. Facebook features mobile apps for devices such as iPads, iPhones and Android phones, so often Facebook is used to tell friends where a person is. Some people complain about the changing privacy controls, and this has led some to abandon the site. Facebook has been blocked in some countries such as China, Vietnam and Iran for various reasons. Facebook has played a vital role in many social and political movements, with many claiming that Facebook was a large reason that Egyptians were able to connect with each other and successfully revolt against their government.

Facebook launches new updates and redesigns on a frequent basis, and this often results in an immediate uproar from users. But frequently users will forget about these changes after a day or two and then complain when changes happen again.

Facebook has been seen frequently in popular culture as it's been lampooned on shows such as South Park. "The Social Network" was a dramatic film released in 2010 about the rise of Facebook and the players behind its sometimes controversial popularity. While people may argue about whether Facebook is a legitimate way to spend time and interact with others, everyone can likely agree that Facebook has become a large part of society.
