World Religions

By: Richard Martine   Post Date : November 06, 2012
Culture, belief and worldviews comprise the religions of the world and demonstrate human spirituality. Religions provide guidelines to moral values, ethical standards, and the laws governing the rituals of life. In many cultures, religion is inseparable from faith and spirituality. Most religions such as Catholicism, Islam and Judaism have organized behaviors, observable rituals and a distinct hierarchy for their clerics.

Religion offers up many practices from prayer to sermons to the study of scriptures, festivals, feasts, funerals, meditations, and more. Music, art, and poetry often accompany religious practices or are inspired by faith. Religion can be defined so many ways, but it is entirely subjective to the individual how they choose to observe their personal beliefs.

Some believe they must have the clerical guidance and must follow the extreme letter or interpretation of worship. Others believe that a more private observance and adherence is called for. While culture most often dictates the type of religion, religion itself appears to be universal to the human species.

From the Native Americans who seek spiritual guidance while sitting in a sweat lodge to the Muslim praying toward Mecca to the Taoist observing the birth of a child at the local shrine, religion brings communities together in common purpose. Religion offers comfort from anxiety and grief while also helping celebrate success and achievement. Religion is the organized worship of a deity or deities.

Every corner of the world has sought the answer to `why are we here,' `what is the meaning of life,' `what happens after death,' and many, many more. From mind-body teachings to ways of life to philosophy to strict anti-religious beliefs, religion asks and answers a lot of questions about the nature, cause and purpose of the universe and the divine.

Improve your knowledge of the religions of the world from Catholicism to Chinese Buddhism to Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism and more.
