Crafts & Hobbies

Hobby and craft books are how-to books for creative people. The number of hobbies and crafts in existence makes for endless possibilities on subjects to write about, and because both children and adults participate in them you have two potential audiences to write for. If you have a hobby you excel at you can share your knowledge with a wide audience by writing a book.

The first thing you want to do is go to a large bookstore and see what books on your subject are there. Look for the books with the most prominent placement on the shelves. Those are the biggest sellers. Examine them carefully and try to find what is missing. Many successful craft books are written to one specific part of a hobby. For instance, if you work with stained glass and have created very unique patterns, you may want to publish a book made up entirely of your patterns. A general book on stained glass is not likely to be very successful because there are so many already out there.

Write very specific instructions but write in a conversational tone. Craft books are supposed to be fun, not read like car manuals. Most importantly, have good images. So much of crafting is visual and your audience will want to know what their final result is going to look like. You may want to work with a professional photographer to achieve the best quality images for your book

Once your book is complete you will want to find a publisher. Look at what publishing houses have published other books on the shelves at the bookstore. Do online research for smaller companies that specialize in craft and hobby books. If you self-publish, contact a local craft store and ask them to sponsor a book signing for your new book.
