  • Be organized: Resumes must be logically organized and easy to skim. Employers may have a great deal of resumes to go through in a short period of time, and your information needs to be easy to extract. The most popular way to organize data when writing a resume is chronologically, starting with the most recent experience. Make sure to include contact information, education, skills and work history.

  • Customize: Take the extra bit of time to find out the name of the person in charge of hiring or the supervisor of the position for which you are applying. Learning a bit about the company and including relevant experience will make you appear willing and excited to get the specific position. Create and tailor your resume and cover letter for each individual position, stating how you found out about the position and what you would bring to the company. You may even want to alter the skills you list on your resume to emphasize those related to the specific position.

  • Be professional: Even if you are sending a resume by e-mail you should not decrease your level of formality. Make sure your e-mail address and voicemail message exude professionalism as well.

  • Be concise and specific: Give employers only the information they need. Don’t be repetitive and do not offer information that is unrelated. Because resumes should be limited to one or two pages, include only necessary and positive elements when writing a resume. Use action words and avoid vague descriptions.

  • Proofread and format: Read over your resume before sending it out. Make sure all margins and bullet points line up. You may also consider having someone else review your resume for clarity and correctness as well. Many employers will not interview applicants who have even a single error on their resumes, believing that errors reveal carelessness that the applicant may carry with them onto the job.

When writing a resume, avoid any personal information that is not relevant to the job, such as race, religion or age. Don’t use a font that is too large or too small or hard to read, as any of these may be the cause of an interviewer passing up your resume.
