Ways to Improve Your Driving

Whether you are a brand new driver or an old pro, driving skills, like any other skill, can always be improved.

As long as you have an interest in improving, these eight driving tips can help you become a better driver:

  1. Take a Class: Instead of waiting until you have to take a class to get out of a ticket, why not take one just for the sake of learning? Online and in-classroom sessions are always available to help you improve your driving.

  2. Turn off Your Auto Pilot: It is extremely easy to take driving for granted once you've been doing it for a while. By making the decision to be more aware and conscious of your driving, you put yourself ahead of the game in terms of improving your skills.

How many times have you gotten to your destination and realized that you really can't remember much of the drive? Every time you get in the car and click your seatbelt, make a conscious decision to pay attention to the drive, not your MP3 player, the radio or your cell phone.

  3. Turn off Everything: Being a better driver requires that you commit to being a driver. That means that you should turn off anything that might give rise to distractions. Talking on your phone or scrolling to find a good song on the radio takes your attention away from the road just as much as putting on eyeliner and jotting something down on a legal pad. Do one thing, and do it well.

  4. Back to Basics: Becoming a better driver needn't be overly complicated. There are fundamental reasons for speed limits, seat belts, red lights, cross walks, etc. Flash back to the days of driver's ed., and remember that those simple rules are in place to keep everyone safe.

  5. Take Care of Your Car: You know what they say about an ounce of prevention. Check your car, especially your tires, regularly. A blow out on the freeway can endanger your safety as well as that of everyone around you. Additionally, windshield wipers cannot be undervalued. The risk created by limited visibility is…well…clear.

  6. Mind the Weather Report: One tip for better driving is to pay attention to the weather conditions. This is especially true for those who live in moderate climes and who are, therefore, unaccustomed to the way the weather affects the road. Both heat and rain can cause the road to be slick, and the power of a little bit of water should not be underestimated.

  7. Slow Down: Slowing down never hurt anyone, and staying home when the roads ice may be a very smart thing to do.

  8. Ease on Down the Road: If you are an aggressive driver (and you know if you are), calm down. Aggressive drivers follow other cars more closely and take more risks with speed and safety. Remember, nothing is so important that it is worth risking your life or the lives of others.
