Tips for Designing a Kitchen

A kitchen is often the focal point of the living area in a home. Even if you're not an avid cook, you should still put a lot of thought into your kitchen's design so that it's easy to move around and pleasant to be in. Below are some tips that will help you create a kitchen design that will work for your lifestyle.

Questions to Ask About Kitchen Design
One of the most important aspects to consider when designing a kitchen is the function of the kitchen. In other words, how are you going to use the kitchen? Your answer to this question will have a large impact on your kitchen design.

Here's a list of some other things you should consider when thinking about kitchen designs:

  • What type of cooking will you do in the kitchen? Are you an aspiring chef, or do you simply need a space to whip up basic meals? If you don't enjoy cooking you probably won't need to spend a lot of money on kitchen equipment. If you enjoy cooking, however, your kitchen design should provide you with plenty of space to perform a variety of kitchen tasks. Similarly, the more cooking you plan on doing, the more you should consider getting industrial equipment, such as larger ovens and refrigerators.

  • How many people will be using your kitchen? If you are the only person who will be using your kitchen, your kitchen design will probably be much simpler than a kitchen designed for a family of five. A large family may want a kitchen design that can accommodate the needs of both adults and small children. For example, while you'll want a large coffee pot for the household's adults, you'll also need cabinets to be easily accessible for children.

  • Are you planning to entertain in your kitchen? This is an important factor of kitchen design. If you want to host parties, you may want an open kitchen that allows you to prep food while simultaneously talking to guests in other areas of your house. You might also want to include a wet bar in your kitchen design if you plan to do a lot of entertaining.

  • How much storage space do you need? Again, the amount of storage space planned for a kitchen's design depends on how many people your kitchen will be accommodating. While a single person only needs a few cabinets to store dishes and food, a family will need significantly more space to suit the needs of a number of people.

  • How much time do you plan on spending to maintain your kitchen? The amount of time you are willing to devote to creating your kitchen design will have an effect on the materials you are able to use. For example, those who have less time will be more likely to choose linoleum rather than tile for redoing their kitchen floors. While you can break your project up in to phases to do all of the things you plan, you'll be less likely to finish it once you stop. Plus, you'll have to live with an unfinished kitchen for a longer period of time, an inconvenience that's annoying at best.

Choosing Kitchen Cabinets for Your Kitchen Design
Kitchen cabinets are an important part of any kitchen design. Today's consumer has a wide array of different styles of kitchen cabinets from which to choose. A recent survey found wood cabinets to be the most popular choice, with eighty percent of purchasers choosing them. While cherry and maple are popular choices for wood cabinets, consumers are also choosing kitchen cabinets made from beech, alder and LyptusŪ, a type of hardwood that comes from hybrid Eucalyptus trees.

Another popular option for kitchen cabinets is glass-front cabinets, which allow you to see inside the cabinets without having to open their doors. However, you may want to avoid glass cabinets if you have small children in your household.

Considering Kitchen Faucets in Kitchen Designs
When redesigning a kitchen, kitchen faucets are also an important item to consider. Kitchen faucets are available in a variety of styles, including high-arching "gooseneck" faucets, faucets with attached sprayers and wall-mounted "pot filler" faucets, which allow you to easily fill large pots in your sink. Of these designs, many people choose the high-arching gooseneck faucets, because of their height and ability to move from side to side.

While most kitchen faucet spouts are made out of chrome-plated brass, some high-end kitchens feature spouts made out of stainless steel. When choosing a kitchen faucet to go with your kitchen design, you will want to decide how much you are willing to spend, as this will affect which faucet you decide to purchase.
