One unforeseen side effect of better elderly health care has been increased incidence of certain diseases. Put simply, people are living long enough that they stand a higher chance of developing disease. For instance, dementia rates have risen sharply over the last three decades.

Challenges in elderly health care have changed as social perceptions of the elderly have changed. In today's society, people age with the intention of enjoying as much independence and good health as possible. These intentions are fueling intense medical research, but also raising the possibility of an upcoming financial crisis in elderly care. With a large elderly population, countries like the United States will have to find the resources to cover elderly health care costs (a challenge Japan already faces).

Obviously, the healthier and more independent a country's elderly population is, the less strain a large aging population will place on the economy. For this reason too, medical research is increasingly focusing on elderly health issues.
