One of the hardest things in life is setting and meeting goals. Although we all set goals for ourselves, meeting the goals is a far different task than setting them. One of the key factors to successfully meeting goals is to learn effective ways of setting them. If your goals are clear and realistic, you will be more likely to accomplish them.

Tips for Setting Goals
Before you begin setting goals, evaluate what you want to accomplish for the long and short term. To do this, you must take a good look at your life and see what things you need to do. What do you need to do to in order to start meeting goals you have already set?

When setting goals, examine all areas of your life, no matter how big or small. Ask yourself what is going on in your life and make sure that there aren’t things that will keep you from meeting you goals. For example, while one of your goals may be to buy a house, current outstanding debt can be a factor that prevents you from reaching this goal. In order to meet your ultimate goal of being a homeowner, pay off your existing debt first. Breaking larger goals into smaller steps can be a helpful tool.

Make a List
Making a list is a very important part of goal setting and reaching your goals. In order to make a good list of goals, take a look at all of the things in your life and decide what might be missing or what isn’t going the way you planned. Be sure that you include all of the parts of your life: home, family, work and friends.

When putting together a list of what you want to accomplish, remember to include fun things when setting goals. Having fun goals that aren’t work-oriented tends to help people accomplish a group of goals.

Get Rewarded for Meeting Goals
In order to meet your goals, be realistic when setting them. If you set an unrealistic goal, such as winning a marathon within a month, you are bound to fail and will lose your motivation. By being realistic when setting goals, you set yourself up for success.

Another important tip for setting goals is to not expect too much of yourself. Similarly, avoid giving yourself too many things to do in a given time frame.

One common sense tip is to be sure the goals are something that you are capable of achieving. While this may seem like an obvious statement, consider the example of buying a house. Although it's a realistic long-term goal for someone with a bit of debt, it's not logical for another who has massive debt and wants to buy a house within a year.

A great way to achieve your goals is to give yourself a reward for meeting goals. Your reward doesn’t have to be big, but it should be something that you enjoy.

Start Small When Setting Goals
When making a list of your goals, break the larger goals into smaller goals, giving yourself a step-by-step path for ultimately meeting the long-term achievement. For example, if your goal is to lose 10 pounds, you could set a mini-goal of losing one pound per week. This will make it easier for you to meet your big goal because you will see yourself making progress. Be sure to set goals that you can reach easily and then move on to the goals that you might have trouble meeting.
